What is the PPWR?
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the new EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste. It aims to reduce packaging waste, strengthen the circular economy, and ensure that packaging can be designed, used, and recycled more sustainably in the future. The PPWR applies to packaging and packaging components. This is particularly relevant for glass decoration: in addition to the glass itself, materials used in the process — such as inks and coatings — may also play a role in this context.
What does PPWR mean for glass finishing?
Glass is one of the packaging materials covered by the PPWR. The regulation introduces new requirements for packaging and its components, which may also include decoration systems such as printing inks and coatings.
DECO GLAS relies on carefully selected inks and components.
What does this mean for you as a customer?
Even under the new requirements, glass packaging can still be decorated to a high standard. We offer you sustainable decoration solutions that allow you to design your glass packaging safely and to a high standard, even under the new requirements.
In doing so, we pay attention to the following, among other things:
- appropriate ink systems
- BPA- and PFAS-free solutions
- compliant and appropriate materials
- future recyclability
How does DECO GLAS support you?
For quite some time now, we have been closely examining current and upcoming packaging requirements and their impact on glass decoration. In doing so, we test and evaluate the ink systems and materials used and take new regulatory requirements into account at an early stage. This enables us to offer you suitable and sustainable decoration solutions and support you in the implementation of your glass packaging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the PPWR also apply to glass bottles?
Yes. Glass is explicitly listed as a packaging category under the PPWR. The requirements apply not only to the glass material itself but may also apply to packaging components and other materials used.
What does DECO GLAS have to do with the PPWR?
As a decoration company, we focus in particular on the materials and processes used in the decoration process and address their requirements in the context of the PPWR.
Does my packaging automatically comply with PPWR requirements when it is finished by DECO GLAS?
Yes and no. We use suitable materials and ink systems that are designed to meet the relevant PPWR requirements. However, whether the entire package complies with the PPWR also depends on other components and the specific intended use, which are beyond our control.
Do I have to forgo glass finishing because of the PPWR?
No. The PPWR does not prohibit glass decoration. The key is to use appropriate materials and processes and to comply with the applicable requirements.
